Overview

Two Days of Legendary Rapids

Raft both of the most famous sections of the New River on our Upper and Lower New River Two-Day trip! On day one, you’ll start on the Upper New River. You’ll find fun and splashy waves, calm water, and tons of fun on this leisurely river section. Class I-III rapids mean you’ll get to raft this section either in a raft or in a single or double inflatable kayak. It’s the perfect intro to rafting and to the New River. Part way through the trip, you’ll stop to enjoy lunch before heading back out to the rapids.

After a fun day exploring the Upper New River, you’ll return to our resort. Here, you can enjoy amenities like our gorge-side pool, restaurants, and bars. Make sure to book a cabin, campsite, or RV site for the night!

On day two, you’ll head out on the exciting Lower New River. This river section travels through the heart of the New River Gorge National Park, where you’ll see iconic Gorge landmarks like Endless Wall and The New River Gorge Bridge. This river section boasts class III-IV rapids and is family friendly (for kids 12+). Our most popular river section, you’ll see why the New River Gorge was picked to be the US’s 63rd national park!

This is not an overnight trip. You will return to the resort after your days of rafting. Stay with us on site and enjoy everything that AOTG has to offer!

FAQ

About the River

Did you know the New River is said to be the second-oldest river in the world? Over millions of years, its white water has carved the New River Gorge and left us with large shelf drops and boulders–a perfect combination of waves and hydraulics that make for world-class rafting. The Lower New River provides adventurous rafting, while the Upper New River is typically more tame.

How to Dress for Rafting

What’s Included

Transportation is covered from the resort to the river and back again. We’ll also provide all your rafting equipment (helmet, personal flotation device or PFD, paddle, and boat) and a complimentary beverage.

What to Bring

Bring any medication you need throughout the day, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a change of clothes to keep at the resort to change into after your trip. Guides carry small, waterproof bags to stow necessary medications. Depending on the time of year and the weather, you may also want a synthetic layer. If necessary, wetsuits and splash jackets are available for rent. Call us to book those, too.

Trip Time

Depending on the day’s water level, you’ll spend between 4-6 hours on the water, plus shuttle time to and from the river. Trip length and intensity vary based on water levels, which change throughout the season.

Your Boat & Guide

Our standard, 16-foot rafts comfortably seat eight rafters and one river guide. Upgrades to 14-foot and 12-foot rafts are available to reserve. Your river guide sits in the back of the raft, where they’ll give instructions for when and how to paddle through each rapid and share their expertise about our rivers and region. Learn more about our guides.
