Most of us are in the same boat right now (pun intended) – we cam hardly wait for summer. At the risk of making you long for hot days even more than you already do, here are 10 specific things we are really looking forward to.
A craft beer festival right on the rim of the New River Gorge. We are celebrating the anniversary of West Virginia whitewater rafting by – surprise – rafting. After you run the mighty New River, come sample over 50 diverse flavors of WV and national brews and listen to some classic Appalachian bluegrass. On the docket: Long Point String Band, Black Mountain Bluegrass Boys, Bing Brothers, and Wild Rumpus.
Waves in Faces
Summer in the east is many things, but mostly hot and muggy. Thankfully, we are trained professionals in cooling you down: just add water. The Class IV Lower New River Gorge is especially popular for overheated adventurers seeking relief and endless laughs.
BBQ & Brews
World-class whitewater, gourmet BBQ and beer…need we say more? Join us in an epic artisanal BBQ experience on the rim of the New River Gorge, also featuring local brews and live music.
We have a whole new section of the river to raft in 2019. The re-licensing of Hawk’s Nest Dam resulted in increased flows that will allow us to raft commercially on the Class III – IV New River Dries for the first time ever. This is history being made now.
The New River also has a few calmer sections filled with Class I – II whitewater that allows us to raft with kids as young as 6. And bonus: 6 year olds raft free on the Upper New. For a more intimate, relaxing experience, check out Glade Creek Canyon Rafting & Hiking (age 8). For a more adventurous experience, try the Family Lower New (age 10).
Wind in Our Hair
Our three cable-based aerial adventures will all open in April, which means that by June, ziplining will be in full gear. For Gravity Ziplines alone that means 1.6 miles of cable and speeds often in excess of 60 mph.
A Pool on the Edge of the World
The deck literally overhangs the rim of West Virginia’s New River Gorge, along with two levels split by a waterfall make Canyon Falls Pool one of the most majestic cool-down spots in the Mid-Atlantic. Canyon Falls Pool will open Memorial Day Weekend.
Fireworks on the Gorge
On Friday, July 5th (so we don’t interfere with the Fayetteville Fireworks on the 4th) we’ll hold our own free fireworks show on the rim of the New River Gorge. Come one, come all!
The Summer Gauley
The river famous worldwide for it’s autumn rafting season actually runs all year round, but with wildly varying flows. We’ll pick the best boat for the best ride and head out. If you’re into high adventure, join us. New this year: we’ve added Summer Gauley Overnights.
It sort of goes with, “just add water,” above, but there’s an obvious third dimension involved, so we’ll give jump rocks their own item. The Upper New has one, the Lower New has two, and you should make a point of leaping from them all.
