Make a Date of It

So, you thought it would be romantic to visit the New River Gorge in Winter? Well, you were spot on. It is romantic. But once you get past the adventures of TreeTops ZipLine Canopy Tour and skiing at Winterplace, what’s left for you and your sweetie to do? It turns out there’s a lot.

1. Go for a walk in the woods or check out scenic views that don’t require much hiking. All the fantastic New River Gorge trails and vistas that here in the Summer are still here in the Winter—with fewer crowds. And the people you do run into? They’re most likely locals with knowledge to tap of what else to see. (Pro-tip: we love to drop knowledge.) Bonus: the views are completely different than they are in warmer seasons. If you have the time, tour several of them.

2. Anybody want to watch the game? Right here at Adventures on the Gorge overlooking the New River Gorge is Chetty’s Pub, which, if we do say so ourselves, has the best burgers around—and a whole slew of big screen TVs. Pro-tip: Don’t suggest one his unless your SO is also into sports.

3. Tour the local restaurants. Fayetteville, WV is a hidden culinary jewel in the heart of Appalachia. Start with Breakfast at Cathedral Cafe or Vandal’s Kitchen. Lunch out at Secret Sandwich Society. Grab dinner at Gumbo’s and drinks at the original Pies and Pints or Maggie’s Pub. Pro-tip: also, keep an eye out for The Station, which will be open any day now featuring dishes by regional celebrity chef, Oscar Aguilar.

Adventures on the Gorge lodging white water rafting, new river, gauley river, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, zip lining, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, mountain climbing, rappelling

4. Go to Poetry, Prose & Plainsong. Fed up with the Winter nightlife and inspired by all the local talent, AOTG raft guide, Andrew Sullivan, started up this coffee house event that happens every Wednesday at The Grove above the popular restaurant, Secret Sandwich Society. Local amateur musicians, poets, writers, story tellers and more come out to claim their five minutes of town fame. And it’s free.

5. Also at the Grove, if it’s Friday or Saturday, then it’s a safe bet they have live music. Check Secret Sandwich Society’s Facebook page for a schedule.
