Summer is right around the corner; summer weather is already gracing us with it’s presence. Just as the human spirit longs to spend time in nature and in the warmth of the sun, this year more than ever has most of us long for a fun adventure with our family and friends in the great outdoors.

The New River Gorge, commonly known as the Grand Canyon of the East, is truly nature’s playground. The New River winds through West Virginia and creates amazing views. The flowing waters of this ancient river provide solace to all those who seek her calming presence amongst the woods of West Virginia. The steep gorge cliffs also create some of the best whitewater on the East Coast. The New River Gorge also offers some of the best rock climbing, hiking and kayaking in the US.

Whether you are looking for an adrenaline-filled rafting trip or a more leisurely float trip, the New River has the perfect option for you. This ancient river is a milestone for east coast paddlers.

The Lower New River steps up the pace with exciting whitewater rafting and over 25 rapids from Classes II-V. Between the rapids and drops there are pools of calm water where you can catch your breath and gather strength for the next challenge. This trip runs through the scenic New River Gorge and finishes up right below the New River Gorge Bridge.

Trip length and intensity varies based on water levels, which change throughout the season. In the spring, the trip is usually 16 miles long; in the summer and fall it is typically 11 miles long. Both trips include a jump rock, swimmer’s rapid, riverside lunch and over 25 other rapids.

The Lower New guarantees a full and thorough cleansing of the soul.

The mild whitewater of the Upper New River offers gentle rapids and scenic views of the New River Gorge. This trip is ideal for family raft trips, scouts and youth groups as an introduction to whitewater rafting.

Larger rafts are used on high water days and duckies (small inflatable kayaks that hold 1 adult or 1 child and 1 adult) on normal days.

The Upper New offers a more calm, relaxing cleansing of the soul.

If you are pressed for time but still want to enjoy the New River, The Rapid Run is perfect. The Lower New River Rapid Run is designed for those who want to experience the excitement of the Lower New River but in a shorter time frame. The Rapid Run has morning and afternoon start times and allows you to enjoy the New River when it is not peak times, creating a less crowded trip.

This express trip runs 8 miles, through 17 rapids and is focused on the whitewater with no lunch or extra stops along the way. It is an ideal option for those looking to go whitewater rafting and do another adventure on the same day.
