Upper New River Whitewater Rafting

Our Most Popular Family Trip

The mild whitewater of the Upper New River offers gentle rapids and scenic views of the New River Gorge. This trip is ideal for family raft trips, scouts, and youth groups as an introduction to whitewater rafting.

Larger rafts are used on high water days and duckies (small inflatable kayaks that hold 1 adult or 1 child and 1 adult) on normal days.

Everyday, all season long, kids ages 7-12 years raft at half the price of the adult Saturday rate with an accompanying adult.  Six year olds raft for free with a paying adult. (If you are booking with a 6 year old, please call.)

Almost 7 Program

This is our custom program inducting children age 6 into our rafting family.  Children will receive:

  • Rafting certificate with his/her name
  • Almost 7 Adventures on the Gorge T-shirt
Minimum Age: 6

The Upper New River is a large volume river, which generally courses through the valley. This section of the river includes ripply shoals, long calm pools, fun waves, and a few rapids to challenge our beginning rafters.

Class I through II, with an occasional III

Our Upper New guides are absolute experts at working with beginner rafters and families with small children. Guides will be either in rafts or in duckies leading the pack.

We typically take duckies on the Upper New. They are inflatable, one or two-person rafts shaped like kayaks. With a duckie, you’ll get to experience a more personal whitewater rafting challenge and have the experience of a lifetime. Our duckies are self-bailing, which means water that splashes in will drain out on its own. They are stable, easy to maneuver, and fun. Standard 16-foot rafts are available as well upon request. They hold 8 guests plus a guide.

This is a full day trip. Depending on the water level, you’ll spend between 4-6 hours on the water plus shuttle time to and from the river.

We provide transportation from our resort to the river and back again, all rafting equipment (helmet, life jacket, paddle and boat) and a sumptuous and filling riverside lunch. You will not go hungry!

Bring any medication you need throughout the day, plus sunscreen, sunglasses and a change of clothes to keep at the resort upon your return. Guides carry small waterproof bags to stow necessary medications. Depending on the time of year and the weather, you may also want a synthetic layer. If necessary, wetsuits and splash jackets are available for rent. Call us to book those, too.

Customized quotations are available upon request for groups with over 15 members.

The Upper New minimum age is 6 years old. Our PFDs (personal floatation devices) have a maximum chest capacity of 58 inches.

Your guides and leaders will discuss specific safety requirements on site.
