The New River Gorge Bridge, ever hear of it? If you want to experience West Virginia’s most prominent manmade landmark in a way that few people ever do, check out Bridge Walk, less than a 5-minute drive from our main campus.
3,030 feet long and 876 feet above the New River, this icon is the longest single-span bridge in the Western Hemisphere, and the 3rd-highest in the United States. Underneath the four lanes of highway 19 and among the rust-red girders and beams is a lesser-known aspect of the bridge: a 2 foot-wide grated-steel catwalk that runs the entire length. Want to walk it?
You’ll begin your 1 ¼ mile epic at our partner Bridge Walk’s headquarters just across highway 19 from Adventures on the Gorge and walking distance from the New River Gorge National Park visitor center. Your adventure will traverse various walking trails, decks, and viewpoints before reaching the underbelly of the bridge and its catwalk. From here you’ll clip in with your safety harness and walk over a half mile with a view of the New River hundreds of feet below you, taking plenty of stops for pictures, sightseeing, and excellent interpretive lectures by your guide. Once on the other side of the gorge, you’ll be picked up by a shuttle bus and returned to your starting point. There’s no other experience quite like the Bridge Walk.
Minimum Age: 8

Every third Saturday of October, route 19 over the New River Gorge Bridge is closed, and BASE jumpers, rappelers, and zipliners are allowed to have fun on this huge steel playground with thousands of spectators looking on from the bridge railings. Can you book a Bridge Walk trip on this day? Yes! Spots are limited and you’ll want to reserve early, but the experience of seeing parachute jumpers whiz past your position beneath the bridge on the narrow catwalk is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
